Somerset Cricket Club overcame an early collapse to finish the rain-shortened opening day of the 2026 Cup Match Classic in a commanding position, closing on 277 for 6 after play finally got under way at 2:30pm following five consecutive days of rain.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Somerset's plans were immediately thrown into disarray when captain Terryn Fray was dismissed from only the second ball of the match, handing St. George's the perfect start.
Colt Jaiden Manders showed impressive composure under pressure, joining Kamau Leverock to rebuild the innings with a 44-run partnership for the second wicket before falling. Tre Manders then continued the recovery, adding 55 runs alongside Leverock to steady the Somerset innings.
Following Leverock's dismissal, vice-captain Dominic Sabir took control. He shared a 33-run stand with Tre Manders before combining with Dion Stovell in the day's defining partnership, adding 84 runs for the fifth wicket to swing the momentum firmly back in Somerset's favour.
Sabir produced the highest score of the day, making an assured 67 from 99 deliveries, an innings featuring 10 fours and two sixes, before eventually being dismissed.
Stovell ensured Somerset finished strongly, remaining unbeaten on 52, while Jermal Proctor will resume alongside him on 23 not out when play continues.
For St. George's, Jonte Smith was the standout bowler, producing an economical spell of 2 for 16 from six overs, but after striking with the second ball of the match, the challengers were unable to prevent Somerset's middle order from taking control.
With four wickets still in hand and two established batsmen at the crease, Somerset will return on the second day looking to build an imposing first-innings total in Bermuda's biggest cricket fixture.
