Bermuda's athletes experienced a day of highs and lows as the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games continued, with teams in beach volleyball, hockey, rugby sevens and tennis all in action.
Rugby: Sevens Claim Win & a Lost
Bermuda's men's rugby sevens side opened day two with an impressive 21-7 victory over Guatemala in Pool B.
Steven Doyling starred in the opening half, crossing for two tries, while Hadleigh Tucker converted both scores to give Bermuda a 14-7 lead at the break.
Tucker then put the result beyond doubt after the restart, scoring a try of his own before adding the conversion to complete an assured opening win.
However, Bermuda were unable to make it back-to-back victories, falling 20-14 to the Dominican Republic in their second match of the day. Tucker scored and converted Bermuda's first-half try before Aiden Kendall crossed in the second period, with Tucker again adding the extras, but the Dominican Republic held on for victory.
Hockey: Team Let Two-Goal Lead Slip
Bermuda's women's hockey team suffered a frustrating 3-2 defeat to Barbados after making the perfect start to their tournament.
Robin Stempel opened the scoring with a field goal in the 11th minute before Elizabeth Davidson doubled the advantage from a penalty corner in the 22nd minute.
Barbados responded strongly after the interval, scoring three unanswered goals to complete the comeback and deny Bermuda an opening-day victory.
Beach Volleyball: Tough Outings on the Sand
Bermuda's beach volleyball teams both faced difficult opening matches against higher-ranked opposition.
In the men's competition, Benjamin Barnett and Connor Somerville were defeated 21-9, 21-8 by Mexico's Carlos Ayala and Antonio Vargas.
The women's pairing of Natalie Gazzard and Megan Hands also went down in straight sets, losing 21-15, 21-5 to Nicaragua's Margarita Lopez and Lolette Rodriguez.
Tennis: Pair Exit in Quarter-Finals
Bermuda's hopes in the men's doubles came to an end despite a bright start against Venezuela.
Trey Mallory and Daniel Phillips edged a closely contested opening set 7-6, but Venezuela's Cesar Cruz and Diego Duran fought back to take the second set 6-1 before sealing the match with a 10-5 victory in the deciding match tiebreak.
While results were mixed across the various sports, Bermuda's rugby sevens team provided the day's highlight with its convincing win over Guatemala, as the island's athletes continued to test themselves against some of the region's strongest competition.
