Bermuda's athletes experienced a day of highs and near misses at the Central American and Caribbean Games, with the men's rugby sevens team opening their campaign with victory and cyclists Kaden Hopkins and Nicholas Narraway both producing strong performances in the individual time trial.
Beach Volleyball
In beach volleyball, Bermuda's pairing of Benjamin Barnett and Connor Somerville faced a difficult opening Group B contest, falling in straight sets to Costa Rica's Araya and Grant. The Costa Rican duo claimed the match 21-7, 21-10 to begin their campaign with a convincing victory.
In the women's beach volleyball competition, Megan Hands and Natalie Gazzard also faced a difficult assignment against Venezuela's Moreno and Rodriguez.
The Bermudian pair were defeated in straight sets, with the Venezuelans claiming a 21-7, 21-5 victory.
Cycling
On the road, Hopkins narrowly missed out on a place on the podium in the men's individual time trial, finishing fourth in a time of 49 minutes 10.33 seconds. Fellow Bermudian Narraway also impressed, crossing the line sixth in 50:03.41 as both riders secured top-six finishes against a strong regional field.
Rugby 7's
The rugby sevens side made the perfect start in Men's Pool B, defeating Barbados 21-12 to launch their tournament with an important win.
There was disappointment for Bermuda's men's rugby sevens team, who were unable to build on their opening victory over Barbados.
Facing a strong Venezuela side in their second Pool B fixture, Bermuda struggled to find a way through a disciplined defence and were beaten 19-0. The result leaves Bermuda with work to do in their remaining group matches as they chase a place in the knockout rounds.
Tennis
There was disappointment in the tennis competition, where Daniel Phillips saw his impressive singles run come to an end in the round of 16.
Phillips was involved in one of the matches of the day before eventually losing 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to Venezuela's Oscar Martinez. After recovering from the loss of the opening set to force a decider, the Bermudian was unable to complete the comeback as Martinez advanced to the Quarter-Finals.
Daniel Phillips and Trey Mallory produced one of Bermuda's most dominant performances of the Games to book their place in the men's doubles quarter-finals.
The pair needed little more than an hour to dispatch Honduras' Mario Rivera and Daniel Caceres, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the round of 16. The convincing win keeps Bermuda's medal hopes alive in the doubles competition after Phillips' singles campaign came to an end earlier in the tournament.
