Last-Minute Flag Bearer Swap and Retro Kit for Bermuda

IslandStats.com
Commonwealth Games Chef-de-Mission Donna Raynor has confirmed a late change to Bermuda’s flag bearer and baton carrier duties for Thursday’s Opening Ceremony following travel disruption.

High jumper Sakari Famous was originally scheduled to play a prominent role in the parade of nations, but cancelled flights forced an urgent reshuffle just hours before the spectacle.

To add to the logistical jigsaw, Bermuda’s swimming contingent will also miss the ceremony due to their competition schedule starting early the following morning.

Speaking to IslandStats, Raynor revealed the updated assignments for the curtain-raiser in Scotland.

“We have a baton carrier and flag bearer and they were selected previously, however due to Sakari Famous’ flight being cancelled I had to change who was carrying what," Raynor said.

"Also the swimmers compete the next morning so they are not available for the Opening Ceremony. Tiara Derosa will carry the Flag and Caitlyn Bobb will carry the baton.”

Alongside the change in line-up, Bermuda’s athletes will be stepping away from tradition when they march into the Alexander Stadium.

The famous Bermuda shorts are being temporarily set aside in favour of a vibrant attire paying tribute to the island's rich musical heritage.

“We won't be marching in the normal Bermuda Shorts, but our outfits are a dedication to the Talbot Brothers' old Bermuda culture," Raynor added.

"Calypso-type shirts, pants, and the boat hat.”
