Leverock Century Guides Holders Warwick to Victory over PHC

Warwick Workmen’s Club 328/7 PHC 189

Western County Cup First Round, White Hill Field: Warwick Workmen’s Club 328-7 (50 overs) beat PHC 189 (41.4 overs) by 139 runs.

A blistering century from Bermuda international Kamau Leverock propelled cup holders Warwick Workmen’s Club to a commanding 139-run victory over rivals PHC in the opening round of the Western County Cup at White Hill Field.

After being put in to bat, Warwick posted a formidable 328 for 7 from their 50 overs, before a disciplined bowling display skittled PHC for 189.

PHC’s decision to bowl first under cloudy skies initially looked like a gamble, but it quickly transformed into a defensive damage-limitation exercise as Leverock took control.

The powerful all-rounder dismantled the PHC bowling attack, smashing a spectacular 101 off just 79 deliveries. His entertaining innings included five boundaries and eight towering sixes, providing the backbone of the champions' innings.

While PHC's Saje Carter continually fought back—claiming excellent figures of 4 for 69 from his maximum 10 overs—Warwick refused to let the run rate drop. Following Leverock's departure, Ajani Lee anchored the lower-order surge with a swift, unbeaten 52 off 51 balls (four boundaries, two sixes) to push the holders past the 300-run milestone.

Chasing a daunting 329 for victory, PHC's reply never quite found the necessary momentum to trouble the holders.

South African native Jan Nel offered lone resistance with a gritty, counter-attacking 81 off 78 balls, featuring four boundaries and five sixes. However, wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end as the pressure of the mounting run rate told.

Fittingly, it was Leverock who returned to haunt PHC with the ball. The star all-rounder capped off a magnificent player-of-the-match performance by taking 3 for 52 from his 10 overs, dismantling the PHC middle order to ensure the famous trophy remains at Warwick for at least another round.
