The historic Western Counties series returns to White Hill Field this Saturday, served up with an intriguing first-round clash as reigning cup holders Warwick Workmen’s Club prepare to defend their crown against a PHC side.
The 50-overs competition, which brings together the west end's fiercest cricket rivalries, promises a high-stakes, high-tempo opener. Warwick enter the match with the silverware in hand, desperate to lay down an early marker, while the challengers from Pembroke Hamilton Club will be aiming to replicate past glories on the very same turf.
While Warwick hold the trophy today, they will need no reminding of what happened the last time these two sides met in a Western Counties match at White Hill Field.
In a dramatic and fiercely contested affair, it was PHC who emerged victorious, completely dethroning the then-champions Warwick by 119 runs. That memorable victory was built on a magnificent, unbeaten century from PHC’s Davin Dill, who smashed 111 off 107 balls to propel his side to a massive total of 290.
Warwick's batting lineup crumbled under the pressure in response, collapsing to 59 for 7 before a gritty tail-end fightback saw them bowled out for 171. PHC’s lethal bowling tandem of Dev Hanuman and Kevin Tucker did the damage on that occasion, taking five wickets apiece to seal a comprehensive win.
With those memories still lingering, Saturday's renewal of hostilities promises plenty of tactical drama and physical edge. Warwick will be eager to write a different script as the hunted, while PHC look to prove they still know exactly how to pull off a White Hill Field ambush.
