Some players leave records. Some leave trophies. The greatest leave a legacy.
Cleveland County Cricket Club and Harrington Workmen’s Club have led the tributes to one of the game's greatest ever servants following the announcement that Dion Stovell has retired from the Eastern Counties Competition.
From his early days at Cleveland County to his ascent as one of Bermuda’s finest international cricketers, Stovell’s Eastern Counties journey has been defined by loyalty, leadership, and relentless excellence.
Selected as a Colt in the 2010 Eastern County Series, the all-rounder became the driving force behind Cleveland’s modern resurgence. He played a pivotal role in ending the club’s agonizing 33-year wait to lift the Eastern Counties Cup in 2014.
His unbeaten 82 from 94 balls against St. David’s, alongside an unforgettable century against Bailey’s Bay, remain etched in local folklore, launching one of the most successful eras in Cleveland’s history.
Stovell retires as the fastest player in history to reach 1,000 Eastern Counties runs, and the first Cleveland player ever to reach the milestone. He finishes an illustrious tournament career with 1,031 runs, 31 wickets, multiple centuries, and a legacy as a former winning captain.
Beyond the weight of the statistics, Stovell will be remembered for his match-winning temperament, calmness under intense local pressure, and his trademark, ever-so-convincing iconic appeal that became synonymous with Eastern Counties cricket.
Reflecting on his journey, Stovell said: “Cleveland is where I started my cricket. Eastern Counties is something I always dreamt about winning for the fans and the community. Cleveland will always have a place in my heart.”
In a joint statement, the clubs added: "Thank you for your commitment, your leadership, and the countless memories you’ve given our club and community.
"You retire from the series a Cleveland County legend, an Eastern Counties legend, and one of Bermuda cricket’s finest. From Eastern Counties Colt to Eastern Counties Legend."
