Bermuda’s Cameron Jeffers turned in a fine all-round performance, but it was not enough to prevent Bristol West Indian Phoenix CC 2nd XI from sliding to a five-wicket defeat against Pakistani Express CC.
The Bristol & District Cricket Association Second Division clash at The Rose Green Centre ultimately swung on a clinical bowling masterclass from Pakistani Express's Junaid Khan.
Having won the toss and elected to bat first on what appeared to be a promising surface, Bristol West Indian Phoenix found it incredibly difficult to establish any sustained momentum.
Opening batsman Otis Lemon offered the most resistance, anchoring the top tier with a fighting, team-high knock of 40. Jeffers chipped in with a gritty 12 from the middle order to try and repair early damage, but the visitors had no answer for the exceptional Junaid Khan.
Khan tore through the heart of the Phoenix batting card with an elite display of line and length. He finished with devastating, match-winning figures of 4 wickets for 25 runs from his full eight-over allocation, bundling the visitors out for a modest 168.
Chasing a modest target of 169 for victory, Pakistani Express navigated their response with great tactical maturity. Their chase was anchored by a well-measured top score of 35 from Syed Mazhar Hussain Shah, whose composure allowed the hosts to stay well ahead of the required run rate.
Jeffers led a spirited fightback with the ball for Phoenix, flexing his tactical muscle to break key partnerships. The Bermudian international off-spinner was the pick of his side's bowling attack, returning highly economical figures of 2 for 30 from his eight overs.
Despite Jeffers' best efforts to apply late scoreboard pressure, Pakistani Express's lower-middle order held their nerve, steering the hosts comfortably to 169 for 5 to secure a comprehensive five-wicket victory.
