The Bermuda Power Boat Association’s highly anticipated Hamilton Harbour Races have been brought to an abrupt and dramatic halt following a serious high-speed collision between a competing power boat and an anchored boat.
The racing schedule was immediately suspended on Sunday afternoon as emergency services scrambled to the scene in the center of Bermuda's capital harbor.
The impact was severe enough to prompt race directors to instantly flash the red flags, ordering all remaining competitors off the course and back to the pits.
The power boat pilot sustained a life threatening head injury and was left unresponsive. He was attended to at the scene by EMTs, but was subsequently pronounced dead by an on-call medical doctor.
The co-pilot suffered a laceration to his head. He was also attended to at the scene by EMTs before he was transferred by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where ,at last check, he continued to receive treatment for his injury.
First responders, including the Bermuda Coast Guard and marine police, rushed to the collision zone within seconds. Officials have confirmed that injuries have been sustained in the crash, though the identities of those involved and the exact severity of the casualties are yet to be made public.
