The All-Stars have been crowned the first-ever Walking Football Cup champions, lifting the prestigious Leroy “Curly Joe” Wilson Cup after a breathless 6-4 victory over Bermuda College.
In an entertaining final that showcased the very best of the island's burgeoning over-50s and over-40s circuit, the All-Stars' clinical edge proved the difference in a ten-goal epic. Despite a spirited display from the Bermuda College outfit, they were unable to contain a rampant All-Stars attack determined to write their names into the local history books.
Earlier in the day, the consolation match provided drama of its own as the Touring Team edged out the Walking Warriors in a tense penalty shootout. Nothing could separate the two sides during a hard-fought 2-2 draw in regulation time, but it was the Touring Team who held their nerve from the spot to secure third place.
The domestic curtain-fall marks the beginning of an ambitious international chapter for the sport on the island.
National team tryouts are scheduled to take place this coming Wednesday. Following the conclusion of the traditional Cup Match Classic holiday, Bermuda's elite walking footballers will officially begin an intensive training program as head coach Leroy Wilson looks to assemble a squad capable of competing at the upcoming Walking Football World Cup.
