The next generation of Bermuda's running elite took center stage as Nicolas Gomez Caines and Freya Dunkle were crowned the boys' and girls' champions of the prestigious 2026 Heritage Day Junior Classic.
The atmospheric two-mile race—organized by the West End Athletic Club—threw a demanding downtown Hamilton route at the young field, pushing competitors to their limits before culminating in a grandstand finish on Dutton Avenue.
In the boys' division, it was an absolute tactical masterclass from Caines. He paced his effort beautifully over the punishing terrain, breaking away in the final phases to clock a superb winning time of 11 minutes and 6 seconds. Spencer Haldeman showcased immense grit to stay within striking distance, crossing the line shortly after in 11:18 to claim a well-deserved second place. The podium was completed by Tobiah Goodchild, who produced a resilient final kick to stop the clock in 11:24 for third.
Meanwhile, the girls' title belonged entirely to a flying Freya Dunkle. Dunkle put on a magnificent display of endurance against a crowded field, crossing the line as the 22nd runner overall in a blistering time of 13:14 to capture the gold medal.
Naomi Nusum chased hard throughout the closing stages, finishing just a breath behind as the 23rd overall runner and second female finisher in 13:26. The final podium spot was locked down by Vivienne Fox, who fought through the mid-morning heat to cross the line 32nd overall, stopping the clock in 14:11 to round out a spectacular morning of junior road racing.
