As the island prepares for another edition of Bermuda’s premier heritage sporting event, the Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby, focus inevitably turns to the giants of the past who defined this grueling trek from Somerset to Hamilton. While many have crossed the finish line at Bernard Park in triumph, two names stand alone as the most prolific victors in the race's storied history: Sandra Mewett and Kavin Smith.
In the Women’s Division, the benchmark for excellence remains firmly attached to Sandra Mewett. Her reign over the Bermuda Day festivities was nothing short of remarkable, as she amassed a total of eight victories within a ten-year span.
Mewett first announced her arrival at the summit of local distance running in 1984, successfully defending her title the following year. After a brief hiatus from the top spot, she returned to claim a third win in 1988, which ignited a period of absolute authority. She secured four consecutive titles between 1989 and 1992, before crossing the tape for a final, historic eighth time in 1994.
The Men’s Division record is held by the legendary Kavin Smith, whose nine victories have made him synonymous with the Derby. Smith’s decade of dominance began in 1993, a win that signaled a changing of the guard in Bermudian athletics. After claiming his second title in 1995, he achieved the rare feat of a "three-peat" by winning in 1996 and 1997.
His relentless pace saw him return to the winner’s circle in 1999 for a fifth title, marking the halfway point of an era that would see him remain unbeaten for years to come.
Smith’s golden run continued without interruption through the turn of the millennium, as he captured every single title from 1999 until 2003. That final victory in 2003 cemented his legacy as the most successful male athlete to ever lace up a pair of sneakers for the Derby.
As the current crop of elite runners prepares to tackle the hills this year, the shadows of Mewett and Smith loom large, serving as a reminder of the discipline and longevity required to become a true legend of the road.
