The Road to Bernard Park: 2026 Road Racing Season in Review

IslandStats.com
With only eight days remaining until the legendary trek from Somerset to Bernard Park, the island’s running community is reaching peak anticipation. The Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby is more than just a race; it is the ultimate test of endurance, tactical patience, and national pride. As athletes begin their final taper, a look back at the 2026 road racing season reveals a landscape of high-speed duels and consistent dominance across the core distances.

The season’s benchmarks were set early in the 5K arena, the competition has been particularly fierce. Philip Woollins recently claimed the Waterfront Wellness 5K title with a solid 18:00 performance, while the women’s race produced one of the closest finishes in recent memory. Marie Dore and Colette Durkin both stopped the clock at 19:03, with Dore ultimately crowned the champion after a chip-time review. Earlier in the season, Maddie Durkin demonstrated her explosive speed by taking the tape in 18:15 at a separate 5K meet, marking her as a serious threat for any distance she enters.

The 8K distance highlighted the strength of Kallan Richardson, who posted a blistering 26:56 at the Ray Swan 8K. This performance underscored Richardson’s status as a top-tier contender for the upcoming Derby. He will face a formidable field of veterans and rising stars, including the defending champion Sean Trott, who is looking to replicate his 2025 victory. Adding to the intrigue is the return of former champion Lamont Marshall, whose tactical savvy and historical success make him a perennial favorite on the hills of Burnt House.

The men’s field is further bolstered by the presence of Dennis Mbelenzi, who recently took the PwC Marathon title in 2:29:07 and will be eager to add a Derby crown to his collection. Spencer Haldeman and Philip Woollins are also expected to be in the lead pack, having shown the consistency and grit required to handle the humidity and the late-race climb into Hamilton.

On the women's side, the battle for the podium appears wide open. Estienne Coetzee has been the picture of perfection throughout the local series, accumulating a maximum 100 points and proving herself to be the most consistent road racer of the year. She will be joined by Teresa Ruiz, a seasoned competitor who consistently finds herself in the top flight of local results. With the likes of Marie Dore, Maddie Durkin, and Colette Durkin all displaying peak fitness in recent weeks, the women’s race is shaping up to be a tactical masterclass.

As the clock ticks down to May 24th, the strategic focus shifts from training volume to mental preparation. Whether it is the hunt for a repeat title by Sean Trott or a new champion emerging from the deep fields led by Richardson and Mbelenzi, the 2026 Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby promises to be a historic chapter in the island's sporting legacy.
