The Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) has announced it will join forces with World Athletics to celebrate a milestone fifth anniversary of Kids’ Athletics Day, part of an ambitious global mission to get 700,000 children moving in 2026.
Since its inception in 2022, the initiative has reached over 1.3 million children worldwide. This year, the campaign aims to push that cumulative total past the two-million mark, using the "Power of Five" theme to celebrate five years of promoting physical literacy, inclusion, and community through sport.
The global festivities kick off throughout May, headlined by Olympic 200m champion and Kids’ Athletics ambassador Letsile Tebogo, who will lead a flagship activation at the World Relays in Botswana.
Closer to home, the BNAA is bringing the celebration to the Whitney Institute on Saturday, May 9th. From 10:00 to 12:00, the school’s grounds will be transformed into a high-energy circuit where local children can test their skills in running, jumping, and throwing.
"This year’s campaign encourages local creativity while contributing to one shared global goal: getting more children moving, more often," said Jarita Vickers, President of the BNAA. Under the guidance of local coaches and senior athletes, participants will engage in obstacle runs, team relays, and throwing challenges designed to build confidence and teamwork in a non-competitive, supportive environment.
The event is more than a one-off celebration; it serves as a launchpad for the BNAA’s revitalized development programme. Jarita Vickers, President of the BNAA, confirmed that the association intends to host these foundational sessions on a quarterly basis to ensure lasting impact within the community.
Registration for the Whitney Institute festival is now open via the official portal, as the island looks to play its part in reaching World Athletics' record-breaking participation targets for 2026.
