The global push to get the next generation moving reaches a milestone this year, as 2026 marks the fifth anniversary of World Athletics Kids’ Athletics Day. For half a decade, the initiative has sought to inspire children across the globe to discover the joy of sport through play, and Bermuda is set to play its part in the festivities.
The Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) has confirmed it will host a flagship local event to coincide with the global celebration. Taking place at the Whitney Institute Field on May 9th, the day is designed to introduce the fundamentals of athletics to children in an environment that prioritizes fun and inclusivity over elite competition.
Since its inception, Kids’ Athletics Day has acted as a catalyst for physical literacy, aiming to build confidence in young people regardless of their sporting background. The Bermuda event, which kicks off at 10:00 am, will feature a variety of stations designed to teach the "run, jump, and throw" foundations that underpin all sporting disciplines.
"This is about more than just finding the next track star," said BNAA President Jarita Vickers. "It is about reaching new communities and spreading a love for movement. By focusing on foundational athletics in an exciting way, we are helping kids build the confidence they need to stay active for life."
The anniversary event comes at a time of renewed focus on grassroots development within the region. Local organizers are encouraging families from across the island to join the celebration, fostering a community spirit that celebrates the power of sport to unite and inspire.
As the baton of inspiration is passed to the next generation this May, the Whitney Institute Field will be transformed into a hub of energy, marking five years of a movement that continues to grow from strength to strength.
