Mixed Results Across the Pond for Bermuda Footballers

IslandStats.com
Kenni Thompson made a significant return to the starting eleven this afternoon as AFC Bournemouth played out a breathless 2–2 draw against Exeter City at Newton Abbot.

In a match that will be remembered for a chaotic five-minute spell, both sides were forced to settle for a point after a flurry of goals transformed a tactical battle into a frantic stalemate. Thompson, who has been a vital creative spark for the Cherries this season, was restored to the lineup and immediately made her presence felt in the midfield, dictating the tempo as Bournemouth looked to gain an early foothold.

The game remained a cagey affair for much of the first hour, but the script was torn up in the closing stages. In an extraordinary window of play, three goals were scored in just five minutes, swinging the momentum back and forth with relentless speed.

Bournemouth appeared to have the upper hand after striking twice in quick succession to take the lead, only for the Grecians to respond almost instantly to level the scores. Despite late pressure from Thompson and the Bournemouth forward line, the Exeter defense held firm to ensure the spoils were shared at the final whistle.

Elsewhere, there was success for Keunna Dill and her FC United of Manchester Women's teammates. In a gritty encounter against Tranmere Rovers Women and Girls, the Manchester side secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory.

Dill was instrumental in the physical battle across the pitch, helping FC United maintain their defensive shape as Tranmere pushed for an equalizer in the dying minutes. The win provides a crucial boost to their league campaign, keeping them within striking distance of the frontrunners as the season enters its definitive phase.

Mia Fishel and her Seattle Reign FC teammates secured a gritty 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pride, but they had to overcome more than just their opponents to do so. After a first half that saw momentum shift back and forth, the match was halted by a lengthy delay due to inclement weather.

When play finally resumed, the hosts looked the more likely to find a breakthrough, with Orlando coming out on the front foot. However, clinical finishing proved the difference. Jess Fishlock and Brittany Ratcliffe found the net for the Reign to ensure the points headed back to the Pacific Northwest, despite a defiant goal from the Pride’s Barbra Banda.

While the battle in Orlando was a cagey affair, the scene at BMO Stadium was one of pure dominance. Angel City FC opened their season with a ruthless 4-0 demolition of Leilanni Nesbeth and the Chicago Stars.

For Angel City, the match was fueled by a desire for "revenge" following their disappointing conclusion to the previous season. They started the new campaign by making a definitive statement, overwhelming Nesbeth’s Stars from the opening whistle to claim a comprehensive victory and an early lead at the top of the standings.

As the first weekend of action draws to a close, the early signs suggest that the race for the 2026 title will be as unpredictable and fiercely contested as ever.
