Warwick Academy asserted their authority over the local running scene today, being crowned overall champions at the Senior School Cross Country Championships following a series of commanding performances at the Arboretum.
In a display of depth and tactical discipline, Warwick Academy emerged as comfortable winners with a total of 164 points. Saltus Grammar School secured the silver medal position with 207 points, while The Berkeley Institute rounded out the podium with 240.
The champions showcased their strength across both genders, cruising to the girls' title with 83 points. They were followed by Saltus on 121 and Berkeley on 128.
The story was much the same in the boys' category, though the margins were significantly tighter. Warwick took the gold with 81 points, narrowly edging out a resilient Saltus side who finished just five points adrift on 86. Berkeley once again claimed third with 112 points.
The Under-16 Girls race provided a moment of history for Bermuda High School (BHS), as Brooklyn Myers delivered their solitary victory of the day. Myers crossed the finish line in a clinical 13:22, well ahead of Saltus Grammar’s Riana Robinson, who clocked 14:17. Warwick Academy’s Lila Readdy took the bronze in 15:32.
The individual brilliance of Myers helped BHS secure the division team honours with 33 points, ahead of Warwick (49) and Saltus (65).
The Under-16 Boys division saw Sanchez Smith secure the first of two gold medals for Saltus. In a fast-paced encounter, Smith clocked 11:23 to finish ahead of Berkeley’s Nathan Foster-Skelton who clocked 12:00.
The battle for the remaining podium spot was the closest of the day, as Foster-Skelton just out-pipped Warwick’s Jens Drea who clocked 12:01. Despite Smith's individual win, it was Berkeley who took the team honours for the division with 47 points, followed by Saltus (51) and Warwick (55).
In the Over-16 Girls race, Jaeda Grant proved her class by breaking away after the opening lap. The Saltus student surged past the Berkeley duo of Azari Jones (15:00) and Kelise Wade (15:33) to win in 14:16. However, in a testament to Warwick Academy's incredible depth, they managed to win the division with 34 points without a single runner finishing in the top three.
The day concluded with a masterclass from Warwick in the Over-16 Boys race. Jackson Langley and Gianluca Bortoli entered as heavy favourites and did not disappoint, cruising to a one-two finish. Langley took the tape in 15:21, with Bortoli just seven seconds behind. Saltus’s Tobiah Goodchild finished a distant third in 17:17.
The Warwick pair’s dominance ensured their school took the division title with a low score of 26 points, comfortably clear of Saltus (35) and Berkeley (65).
