Weather Wipes Out Sunday’s BUT All-Star Run

IslandStats.com
The Bermuda Union of Teachers (BUT) has been forced to postpone its highly anticipated 1.6k and 5k Run/Walk, which was scheduled to take place this Sunday, February 1st. The event, set to feature hundreds of participants across the West Pembroke and North Shore routes between 8:30 am and 11:00 am, has been called off due to a forecast of treacherous weather conditions.

The decision follows an amber alert-style forecast for Bermuda, which predicts windy conditions throughout Sunday with gusts reaching up to 49 mph from the southwest. With temperatures hovering between a high of 21°C and a low of 16°C, and a 35% chance of rain during the race window, organizers have prioritized the safety of the student-athletes and marshals.

The Ministry of Public Works had previously issued traffic notices for the event, which was set to start and end at West Pembroke Primary School. While participants and parents had been preparing for the premier school-aged road race, the sheer strength of the predicted winds made staging the event at the coastal West Pembroke location untenable.

The BUT is currently working with the Ministry of Education and relevant authorities to find a suitable replacement date in the already congested mid-winter sporting calendar. Registrants are advised to hold onto their race bibs, as a further announcement regarding the rescheduled date is expected early next week.
