Lewis and Sharma IslandStats.com Bermuda's Paralympian Jessica Lewis continued her impressive showing at the Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa, securing a silver medal in the Women's 400m Wheelchair final.
The T53 competitor, who had advanced to the final with the second-fastest qualifying time, once again demonstrated her speed and consistency on the track.
Lewis, lining up in lane 5, put in a determined performance against a competitive field that included T54 athletes, who have a greater degree of trunk function. The race was won by Nandini Sharma, a T54 competitor, who clocked a winning time of 58.49 seconds from lane four.
Lewis, however, pushed hard to secure her place on the podium, crossing the line in second place with a time of 59.67 seconds. This follows her preliminary heat performance where she had finished in 59.23 seconds to qualify for the final.
Speaking to www.islandstats.com, Lewis said: “I’m happy with 250m of the race. I hit a higher max speed within the first 200m than I did in the prelim but ran out of gas for the last 150m when the headwind picked up. Coach Geoff and I set a target to be faster in the first 200m so I met that."
Her comments highlight the strategic approach she and her coach, Geoff, took to the race, focusing on a more aggressive start. Lewis added, "Overall I’m still happy to be consistently under the 60-second mark though."
Her performance underscores her status as a top-level competitor and her ability to consistently challenge for medals at major championships. The silver medal is a significant achievement for Lewis as she continues to compete and excel on the international stage.
