BSA President Wilkinson Talks BSA July & More in 2025

IslandStats.com
Garon Wilkinson, president of the Bermuda San Shou Association (BSA), has been actively involved in the martial arts scene in Bermuda for many years. He recently provided updates on the organization's recent performances and preparations for upcoming events.

Recent Performances at the Rained-Out Fight Night Champion in Dockyard:

While the event was "rained out," it appears the BSA still had fighters compete, likely on an undercard or in a modified format. According to a February 2025 report, Garon Wilkinson praised the performances of amateur Sanda kickboxers who competed at a "Fight Night at The Shed in Dockyard." Several BSA fighters showcased their skills against competitors from the Kaniwa Dojo in Amarillo, Texas.

Notable performances included:
Adult Bouts: Muryah Swan defeated Sarah Peterson, while Varshini Srinivasan competed against Ashley Williams.
Junior Fighters: Tristan Robinson, Michael Tristan Burgess, and Geraldine Sidders all earned victories.

Wilkinson specifically highlighted the "entertaining and closely fought" battle between Robinson and Gaddy, and commended Burgess for his technical display. He was particularly impressed by 16-year-old Muryah Swan's standout performance against an older opponent.

Club Preparing for World Wushu and Sanda Championships:

The Bermuda San Shou Association regularly prepares its athletes for international competitions, including the World Wushu Championships (which includes Sanda, a full-contact fighting discipline). Wilkinson has a long history of coaching and participating in these events, often emphasizing rigorous training.

For example, in 2024, Wilkinson was reported to be "extremely pleased" with Bermuda's performances at the 14th Wushu Pan American Championships, where the contingent secured thirteen medals, including eight gold. This event served as significant preparation for future World Championships. Athletes like Krista Dyer were noted to have gotten "some really good preparation for the upcoming Sanda World Cup."

The BSA focuses on developing its athletes through intense training regimens, emphasizing both physical and mental preparedness. Wilkinson has also been instrumental in building the sport in Bermuda, even becoming the island's first World Kickboxing and Karate Association (WKA) graded black belt in 2022, further solidifying his expertise and commitment to the sport.

The club also hosts local events, such as the Bermuda Open Wushu Championships, which serve to develop newer athletes and prepare them for the international stage. These local competitions provide valuable experience on the "leitai" (the elevated platform used in Sanda) in a less daunting atmosphere.
