Armstrong Competes in Indoor Marathon Relay

IslandStats.com
Terrance Armstrong would compete in an Indoor Marathon Relay, helping his team finish 2nd overall with a time of 2:28:17.

Armstrong said, “What a fun night of running and for such a great cause, CUIMC (Team Relay marathon). We had a great bunch of “young” men running an Indoor Marathon Relay.

It was 8 of us, ages ranging from 51.5 to 59 years young, and the goal was to run sub-2:30 as a team for a Marathon on the NY Armory Indoor Track – hence the team name “Project 2:30”.

Thanks to Steven Segaloff for inviting me onto the group and Jonathan Schindel for putting this all together. This was my first Indoor Marathon Relay and couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to do it with.

I really enjoyed the comradery and competitiveness of testing our own limitations we all pre-set out to accomplish, not to mention dodging and weaving the other 25 competitors along the way from other teams on the 200m track at the same time.

There was a max of 8 runners on a team and each competitor was only allowed to run 3 times. I offered to run 3 x 2k (10 laps each).

It gets very confusing out there concentrating on passing people to maintain your pace and keeping track of your own laps.

I ended up running 9 laps (1 lap short) on my first run, which with some strategic calculations along the way we realized this and the extra lap was picked up before it got too late and it would be left solely on the last few runner to pick it up.

I had a goal to run 5:30/mi for the 3 x 2k, figuring we would have close to 30 mins rest between each run. Surprising myself with my fitness, felt really strong as I actually ended up averaging 5:22/mi (40.5/secs per 200m) overall and dropping a 34/35 sec, 200m at the very end on tired legs.

We ran 2:28.17 as a team, which is 1 minute faster than their time last year. Which, if it holds up is a New Age Group Record for the event.
