Noah Marcelo delivered a sensational five-hit, two-homer performance as standout Adam Hall and the Winnipeg Goldeyes held off a late surge to defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries 9-6.
Hall played a pivotal role in the Goldeyes' offensive barrage, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI as Winnipeg built an early seven-run cushion before withstanding a spirited fightback from the hosts.
Early blitz sets the tone
Winnipeg opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Marcelo led off with a double to left field, eventually crossing the plate after consecutive two-out walks to Keshawn Lynch, Raphaël Pelletier, and Peyton Holt.
The Goldeyes stretched their advantage to 3-0 in the third. Ramón Bramasco and Hall singled before Marcelo loaded the bases with a knock to centre field, setting up Lynch to drive home Bramasco and Hall with a sharp base hit to right.
Winnipeg broke the game wide open with a four-run explosion in the fourth. Holt doubled and came around to score on Hall’s RBI single to right. Marcelo followed with a two-run double to left, scoring Bramasco and Hall, before crossing home on a wild pitch to make it 7-0.
Canaries mount fightback
Sioux Falls answered in the bottom of the fourth through Trevor Achenbach’s two-run homer to left, but Marcelo restored Winnipeg’s authority in the sixth with a towering solo shot to straightaway centre.
The Canaries refused to fold, plating two in the sixth through a TJ Racherbaumer RBI double and a Joe Vos single, before cutting the deficit to 8-6 in the seventh courtesy of a Jabari Henry ground-rule double and another wild pitch.
Marcelo and bullpen close the door
Marcelo delivered the decisive blow in the eighth, launching his second home run of the evening over the left-field fence to secure the 9-6 margin. He finished a remarkable 5-for-6 with two doubles, two homers, four runs scored, and four RBIs.
Starting right-hander Landen Bourassa earned the win after striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings, while Sage Ferguson tossed a scoreless eighth and Derrick Cherry struck out two in a spotless ninth to shut the door.
