Bermudian infielder Adam Hall and the Winnipeg Goldeyes saw their franchise-record 12-game home winning streak come to a halt following a narrow 4-3 defeat to the Sioux City Explorers at Blue Cross Park.
Despite a spirited middle-innings fightback sparked by Hall, the division-leading Goldeyes (43-34) were unable to overcome an early four-run deficit as Sioux City held on in a tense series opener.
Early Damage Proves Decisive
The Explorers wasted no time seizing the initiative, striking for three runs in the top of the first inning. Braulio Vásquez opened the scoring with an RBI single to bring home Austin Davis, before Alberto Osuna singled to right to plate Henry George. Yorman Rodríguez followed with an RBI groundout to hand the visitors an early 3-0 advantage.
Sioux City extended their lead in the fourth when Zane Denton singled and crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly from Davis, making it 4-0.
Goldeyes Mount Fightback
Winnipeg began chipping away in the bottom of the fourth. Hall ignited the rally by snapping a streak of 11 consecutive batters retired by Explorers starter Nathan Mertens, ripping a single and promptly stealing second base. Centre fielder Noah Marcelo followed with a sharp line-drive single to center to bring Hall home and put Winnipeg on the board.
The momentum continued in the fifth as Jiandido Tromp and Kevin García delivered back-to-back singles. Designated hitter Ray-Patrick Didder doubled to left field to score Tromp, before Ramón Bramasco lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in García and cut the margin to 4-3.
Bullpen Holds Firm but Rally Falls Short
Winnipeg’s bullpen delivered a flawless performance to keep the game within reach, combining for five scoreless innings. James Colyer tossed two shutout frames, followed by single scoreless innings from Eli Saul, Sage Ferguson, and Arij Fransen.
The Goldeyes created a prime opportunity in the eighth when Bramasco walked and Marcelo singled, with both executing a double steal to put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. However, Sioux City escaped the jam unscathed.
Tromp led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit, but Explorers reliever Jake Morrill retired the next three batters to close out the contest and claim his ninth save of the campaign.
