Bermuda’s squash contingent endured a demanding opening day on the court as the XXVII Pan American Squash Championships got underway in Asunción, Paraguay.
Competing across the men's and women's individual singles draws, all six Bermudian representatives suffered straight-set defeats against high-calibre regional opposition at the qualifying tournament for the 2027 Pan American Games.
Men's Singles: Trio Fall in Straight Sets
In the men’s individual draw, D'Vario Thompson found the going tough in his opener against Jamaica's Tahjia Lumley, succumbing 3-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-4).
Teammate Anaya Smith met a similar fate against Canada's Alonso Escudero, with the Canadian controlling the tempo to claim a clinical 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-3) victory.
Bermuda's top-seeded male entrant Taylor Carrick entered the competition in the subsequent round following an opening-round bye. However, Carrick was unable to halt the momentum of El Salvador’s Alejandro Enriquez, going down 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-8) despite mounting a stern challenge in the third game.
Women's Singles: Resolute Opposition Proves Decisive
The women's individual competition proved equally unforgiving for Bermuda's trio:
Rachel Barnes faced a formidable challenge against Costa Rica's Anita Pinto, falling 3-0 (11-0, 11-0, 11-5) after Pinto seized early control of the glass court.
Sydney Wallace pushed hard in a competitive exchange against Costa Rica's Camila Gallegos, but was edged out in three straight frames 11-9, 11-6, 11-6.
Abigail Brewer was defeated 3-0 (11-1, 11-3, 11-2) by El Salvador's Winifer Waleska Bonilla Sandoval.
With the opening singles fixtures completed, the Bermudian squad will turn their attention to the upcoming doubles and team events as championship action continues in Asunción.
