The Lincoln Saltdogs produced an impressive offensive display to defeat Adam Hall and the Winnipeg Goldeyes 8-3 at Haymarket Park.
Hall endured a tough outing at the plate, going 0-for-2 as Winnipeg fell to a 40-33 record for the season.
The hosts drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning when third baseman Calyn Halvorson singled to right field, allowing right fielder Cary Arbolida to cross the plate.
Lincoln doubled down on their advantage in the third courtesy of a pair of power hits. Left fielder Jairo Pomares launched his 12th home run of the campaign to right field, before Arbolida connected for his tenth two batters later to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The Saltdogs kept the pressure on in the fifth inning. Shortstop Nick Shumpert kicked off the frame with a double before scoring on Arbolida’s sacrifice fly to centre field. First baseman Jake Hjelle then drove in Pomares with a sacrifice fly to left, pushing the deficit to five.
Pomares was back in the action in the sixth, doubling to bring home centre fielder Cam Phelts—who had walked and stolen second—to make it 6-0 to the home side.
Winnipeg finally broke their duck in the top of the seventh. First baseman Raphaël Pelletier led off with a walk and advanced to second on a Max Murphy groundout. Left fielder Jiandido Tromp then drove in Pelletier with a double to left field, before shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder singled home Tromp two batters later to trim the margin to 6-2.
The Goldeyes threatened a late comeback in the eighth when centre fielder Noah Marcelo smashed a two-out solo home run to right field—his 13th of the season—to bring the visitors within three.
However, Lincoln shut the door in the bottom half of the inning. After Halvorson, Jacob Morrow, and Phelts loaded the bases, Shumpert stroked a two-run single to drive home Halvorson and Morrow, restoring the five-run cushion and sealing a decisive victory.
