The Winnipeg Goldeyes officially secured their first series victory of the season, grinding out a clinical 5-3 win over the Milwaukee Milkmen at Blue Cross Park. The hard-fought triumph marks a significant turnaround for the hosts, representing their third victory in four outings as they continue to climb the early-season standings.
Second baseman Adam Hall played an energetic role in the win, finishing 1 for 4 from the plate, logging a hit and scoring a vital run to help anchor the offense.
For the second consecutive game, Milwaukee struck first in the top of the opening inning. Third baseman Michael Hallquist singled on the very first pitch of the afternoon and later came around to score on designated hitter Parker Lester’s sharp base hit through the right side of the infield.
The 1-0 scoreline held firm until the bottom of the fourth when the Goldeyes capitalised on a defensive breakdown. With runners in motion, a critical throwing error following a sacrifice bunt by T.J. Schofield-Sam allowed both Max Murphy and Hall to cross the plate. Keshawn Lynch then extended the lead to 3-1, drilling a double to right field to drive in Schofield-Sam.
Winnipeg added two insurance runs in the sixth courtesy of Noah Marcelo, who lined a single to left to score Ray-Patrick Didder and Lynch, pushing the advantage to 5-1. While Hallquist cut the deficit to 5-3 with a towering two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame, Winnipeg reliever Derrick Cherry entered from the bullpen to retire all six batters he faced to lock down his second save of the summer.
The match featured an emotional return for Goldeyes starter James Bradwell, who pitched the opening frame in his first competitive appearance since sustaining a season-ending injury last August.
Quinn Waterhouse earned the victory with three innings of stellar relief, striking out three and allowing just two hits, while Eli Saul, Tasker Strobel, and Arij Fransen combined cleanly to bridge the gap to the ninth.
The victory capped off a highly productive Saturday for the front office, who earlier in the day finalized the signing of rookie right-handed relief pitcher Chas Wheatley.
The 24-year-old Edmonton native, who put up a 4-1 record over four seasons at the University of Iowa, becomes the seventh Canadian player on a highly diverse Winnipeg roster. The Goldeyes will now look to sweep the remaining fixtures of the home stand before heading out on the road.
