The Kane County Cougars unleashed a devastating offensive onslaught, crushing Adam Hall and his Winnipeg Goldeyes teammates 14-2 in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,847 at Blue Cross Park.
From the third inning onward, Winnipeg simply had no answer for the Cougars' bats, with Claudio Finol putting on a masterclass at the plate to hand the struggling Goldeyes their fourth consecutive defeat of the young season.
Following two scoreless opening frames, the visitors finally broke the deadlock in the top of the third when second baseman Josh Allen lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Charles Mack.
The Cougars began to find their rhythm in the fourth, stringing together three consecutive doubles from Todd Lott, Alex McGarry, and Claudio Finol to push the lead to 3-0.
By the fifth, the floodgates had burst wide open. After Lott drove in Armond Upshaw with an RBI single, Finol stepped up to crush a towering three-run home run to left field, instantly extending the advantage to a commanding 7-0.
The Goldeyes (0-4) finally scratched a run back in the bottom of the fifth frame. Designated hitter Jiandido Tromp grounded out to shortstop, allowing left fielder Roby Enríquez to cross the plate and trim the deficit to 7-1.
Any hopes of a Winnipeg comeback were ruthlessly extinguished across the next two frames. Charles Mack hit a solo shot to right-center in the sixth before Kane County orchestrated a devastating five-run explosion in the top of the seventh.
Finol was the executioner once more, launching his second three-run home run of the evening to left field to make it 11-1. The nightmare continued for the hosts as Upshaw lined an RBI triple to right, followed immediately by a Matt Bottcher single that drove Upshaw home to leave the scoreboard reading a staggering 13-1.
The relentless visitors tacked on their 14th run in the eighth inning when a sharp Mack single up the middle allowed the unstoppable Finol to score. Winnipeg managed a minor consolation in the bottom of the ninth when Tromp laced an RBI double to left to bring home Keshawn Lynch, but it did nothing to soften the blow of a humbling home defeat.
On the mound, Vin Timpanelli (1-0) was exceptional for Kane County. He earned his first victory of the season after tossing six disciplined innings, scattering just three hits and allowing a single earned run while fanning three. Relievers Graham Firoved and Justin Lange seamlessly closed out the final frames.
For Winnipeg starter Luke Boyd (0-1), it was an evening to forget. Boyd was battered for seven hits and five earned runs over 4.2 innings. While he managed four strikeouts, he was unable to contain the Cougars' power surge before handing over to a overworked bullpen featuring Ryo Kohigashi, Eli Saul, and Quinn Waterhouse.
The Goldeyes must now urgently dust themselves down and find answers after a winless start to their campaign.
