Hall & Goldeyes’ Fall on Opening Night to Milwaukee

IslandStats.com
Adam Hall and the Winnipeg Goldeyes endured a tough start to their American Association campaign, falling 6-2 to the Milwaukee Milkmen on a night where personal records overshadowed the final scoreline.

While the Goldeyes’ bats struggled to find a consistent rhythm under the lights at Franklin Field, the evening belonged to Max Murphy, who etched his name into the franchise history books with a landmark performance.

Milwaukee seized control from the opening frame. In the bottom of the first, Griffin Doersching drove in Michael Hallquist with a sharp single to centre to ignite the home crowd. Hallquist then took matters into his own hands in the second inning, launching a towering two-run home run to center field to push the lead to 3-0.

The Goldeyes’ starter Landen Bourassa (0-1) settled in after the early turbulence, working five innings and striking out five, but the damage had already been done. Opposite him, Milwaukee’s Solomon Bates (1-0) was imperious, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just three hits to stifle the Winnipeg offence.

Winnipeg finally broke through in the sixth inning when Roby Enríquez—who enjoyed a perfect four-for-four night—smashed a double off the wall to bring home Hall. However, the true highlight arrived in the ninth.

Max Murphy connected for a late double, a hit that represented his 1,002nd total base in a Goldeyes uniform. In doing so, he surpassed the legendary Reggie Abercrombie to become the club’s all-time leader in total bases.

Any hopes of a late Winnipeg resurgence were quickly dampened. Milwaukee responded to the Goldeyes' first run with two of their own in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of an Andrew Sundean single. Doersching then added his second RBI of the night with a solo blast in the seventh to effectively end the contest as a spectacle.

A late fielder's choice by Jiandido Tromp allowed Murphy to score in the ninth, but it served as little more than a consolation for the visitors.
