Day four of the Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Senior Championships in Guyana saw the focus shift to the team competitions, with the Bermuda Men's Veterans securing a dominant win while the Women's team faced expected challenges due to limited squad numbers.
The Bermuda Men's Team started their campaign emphatically with a dominant 12-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago. The victory saw strong performances across the board:
Taylor Carrick defeated Luc Davis 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-5). Noah Browne defeated Joel Augustine 3-0 (11-3, 11-5, 11-4). Anaya Smith defeated Ross D'Juran 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-6). D'vario Thompson closed out the win by defeating Peter Pirtheesingh 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-5).
The Bermuda Men’s Veterans also had a spectacular start, securing a 9-0 clean sweep against the Cayman Islands. Stephen Smith (11-1, 11-2, 11-4), Hadleigh Farrer (11-3, 11-6, 11-5), and Peter Drury (11-5, 11-8, 11-1) all won their matches in straight sets.
However, the Men’s Veterans faced a tougher second fixture against Barbados, going down 9-3. Despite the team loss, Hadleigh Farrer pulled back points for Bermuda with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mark Gilkes (11-9, 8-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8), after Stephen Smith and Peter Drury had suffered defeats.
The Bermuda Women’s team, fielding only three players, faced a major hurdle in securing positive results against larger squads.
In their opening match against hosts Guyana, Bermuda went down 20-1. Bermuda’s solitary point was earned by Melina Turk, who won a set against Mary Fung-A-Fat, ultimately going down 3-1 (11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7). Abigail Brewer lost 3-0 to Ashley Khalil, and Alex Furtado lost 3-0 to Kirsten Gomes.
The team then faced Barbados, suffering a heavy 15-0 defeat. Melina Turk lost 3-0 to Megan Best, Abigail Brewer fell 3-0 to Amanda Haywood, and Alex Furtado went down 3-0 to Eboni Atherley.
The women's team will continue to battle in the knowledge that securing points is challenging given their limited numbers.
