Stepping onto court with the very best is a dream for any athlete, but for Bermuda’s Spencer Moss, it was the ultimate test of officiating. Fresh off his experience at the U.S. Open of Squash in Philadelphia, one of the sport's most prestigious PSA World Tour Platinum events, Moss has reflected on a demanding but exhilarating fortnight at the pinnacle of professional squash.
Serving as a referee at a major tournament requires nerves of steel and absolute precision, especially when the world's finest players are battling for supremacy.
“It’s a different level of intensity,” Moss stated. “The speed of the game, the fine margins of the calls—you have to be completely locked in for every single point.”
Moss confirmed that his duties put him front and center for some of the biggest matchups, notably involving the players ranked World Number Two in the Women's draws as well as the USA #1 Men's and USA #1 Women's.
“The opportunity to officiate matches featuring some of the top players in the world was incredible,” he explained. “These athletes are meticulous, highly professional, and they bring a focus that demands the absolute best from the officials, too.”
Moss's selection and successful performance at the US Open is a significant moment for squash officiating in Bermuda, demonstrating the island’s commitment to not only producing talented players but also world-class officials.
His experience will now be crucial in mentoring the next generation of Bermudian referees, helping to raise the standard of local competition.
“It was an honour to represent Bermuda on such a major stage,” Moss concluded. “It’s given me invaluable experience that I hope to bring back and share. Now, it’s about getting ready for the next challenge.”
