Bermuda's Spencer Moss has made a historic entry into one of the sport’s most prestigious events, officiating three high-profile matches on the opening day of the U.S. Open of Squash in Philadelphia.
Moss, Bermuda’s highest-qualified squash official, was selected by the World Squash Officiating Committee to referee at the Platinum-level PSA World Tour event.
His duties on the opening day included overseeing some of the world’s best talent:
Moss officiated the tournament's opening match, which saw the women's World No. 2, Hania El Hammamy of Egypt, secure a straight-games victory over Malaysia’s Aifa Azman with scores of 11-2, 11-5, 11-8.
He was also the official for Belgian No. 1 and World No. 6, Tinne Gilis, who defeated Tomato Ho from Hong Kong in another three-game contest: 11-7, 11-4, 11-7.
In the men's draw, Moss was on court as U.S. Men's No. 1 Timmy Brownell defeated fellow American Alexander Dartnell in straight games: 13-11, 11-3, 11-2.
Reflecting on his experience at the U.S. Open, Moss shared his enthusiasm with local media, stating, “It was absolutely amazing... so much fun!!!”
Moss’s appointment is a significant moment for Bermudian squash, highlighting the island's commitment to developing talent both on and off the court.
