Toms & Bedwas Go Down Again

IslandStats.com
Brynley Toms and his Bedwas teammates’ hunt for a win continues as two yellow cards on 47 and 51 minutes proved expensive. It’s not all doom and gloom however as the team ran in five tries to gain two bonus points for four tries and finishing within 7 points of their opponents Carmarthen Quins falling 35 – 34.

On a warm, sunny late September afternoon conditions were near perfect for running rugby. Bedwas notched the first points of the afternoon via a Joe Scrivens penalty goal after two minutes.

Carmarthen responded three minutes later with a try from former Bedwas favourite Mathew John; full back Aled Thomas adding the extras.

Bedwas hit back with two tries from winger Patric Lewis but both saw Scrivens wide with his conversion attempts.

Two Aled Thomas penalties on 13 and 22 minutes reduced the arrears.

Carmarthen had number 8 Lewys Millin sinbinned for a punch on the touch judges’ advice after the referee missed the offence and whilst he was off the field Kane Teear-Bourge looked to have added a third try but his attempt was ruled out due to foot in touch.

On the stroke of half time a good passing move put Patric Lewis over in the corner but again the conversion drifted wide but Bedwas went in for the break 20 points to 13 ahead.

A Luke Crane try shortly after the interval after a Carmarthen defensive error was converted by Scrivens and with two minutes of the second half played it looked to have put Bedwas in control.

However Adam Williams was sinbinned for an off the ball tackle on 47 minutes followed three minutes later Jacob Chilcott followed him after the referee’s patience with the Bedwas defense ran out.

Carmarthen didn’t waste their two man advantage as Lewys Millin and Dylan Morgans crossed for tries, the latter improved upon by Thomas’ conversion.

Bedwas made several changes whilst down to 13 men fresh legs preventing further scores.

Replacement Gareth Rees claimed Carmarthen’s fourth and bonus point winning try after 65 minutes followed four minutes later by an Elis Lloyd try, although both went unconverted it extended Carmarthen’s lead.

Replacement Dion McIntosh pulled back a try back for Bedwas with three minutes remaining and with Scrivens’ successful conversions Bedwas were a solitary point adrift. Carmarthen held out to claim the win despite the home side’s efforts.
