The opening match needed an extra 10 minutes to decide a winner as a Penalty goal in the second period of Extra Time off the boot of France kicker Jonathan Chassaing earning them a 18 - 15 win over Canada.
This match was played in high winds and heavy rains at times and ended with the match level at 15 - 15 . France got on the board first with a Try from Goderzi Shvelidze followed by a Conversion off the boot of Chassaing earned them a 7 - 0 lead.
Canada would draw level minutes later when Regis Senier went over for a Try for France, but with the Conversion missed the score remained 12 - 7, Canada refused to go quietly as they answered with a Try from Morgan Finley who finished off a great move, however the Conversion attempt was missed leaving the at 12 - 12.
The two teams traded Penalties that moved the game into the overtime period.
In the overtime period, Canada decided not to make a Penalty Kick attempt, but France would emerge victorious after they took advantage of a Penalty attempt.
