Brynley Toms and his Bedwas teammates returned to league action with a whitewash against Swansea 52 - 5 in a foggy yet pulsating home fixture in the Principality Premiership.
Most of the early possession was for Swansea as Bedwas failed to gain any substantial territory for the first ten minutes. Indeed, it was only a forward pass from Swansea centre Jedd Evans that prevented an early try for the visitors. However, once Bedwas found their stride and began to play rugby in the right areas there was little the visitors could do to resist the imperius Bedwas forwards.
Just after 15 minutes, an irresistible scrum gave Bedwas a penalty that was kicked into touch for a line-out drive which saw Bedwas stalwart Matthew Pettit bundle over for a try. Though the conversion was missed, James Dixon had a fine day at the tee, kicking 6 of 8 conversions.
Five minutes after their first, another driving maul from the home side saw Bedwas awarded a penalty try and Swansea receiving a yellow card to rub salt into what would become some very deep wounds.
It would have been another rapid Bedwas try were it not for some spatial confusion on the Bedwas left wing. A simple two-on-one was butchered in a forward pass. This allowed Swansea to steal some momentum as the Bedwas defence failed to deal with a chip through which was scored by Swansea fullback Josh Jones.
Unfortunately for Swansea, Andrew Waite crashed over for a converted try before the half.
At half-time with Bedwas leading 19-5 no-one would have written off Swansea just yet. Handling errors had been a feature of the game and so it came as great relief to home fans as the ball popped through several Bedwas hands before captain Nicky Griffiths found the gap for a 47th minute try.
With the bonus point secured, Bedwas set about sealing the deal. As play broke up, Aaron Bramwell made a searing run from 15 meters out to touch down.
Reinforcements from the bench also had their say as substitute backs Luke Crane and Mike Callow scored tries. Aaron Bramwell had the final say at the 75th minute as Principality Premiership ‘player of the month’ Robson Blake barreled through numerous tired Swansea defenders to make 20 meters before popping the ball off to Bramwell who sealed the deal for Bedwas.
