Toms & Bedwas Continue Winning Streak

IslandStats.com
Another superb team effort from Brynley Toms and his Bedwas teammates earned a deserved win at Church Bank in what was an even contest. An unusual feature of this game being that both starting Bedwas prop forward’s played the entire eighty minutes, with one of them, Dan Preece scoring the match winning try very late in the game for the second successive week.

The game took a while to settle the persistent rain making handling tricky for both side but Bedwas took the lead after 13 minutes courtesy of a Richard Powell penalty. Former Bedwas outside half levelled things up ten minutes later with a penalty of his own.

The home side took the lead two minutes later with centre Craig Woodall crossing after a flowing move down the left, Maynard added the extras.

Bedwas hit back within five minutes the ball making its way to Pat Lewis who darted over in the corner, Powell’s conversion drifting across the posts rather than through them.

Both sides continued to push hard for a further score but it was Bedwas who achieved it with a last-kick-of-the-half penalty goal by Powell to put his team a single point ahead at the break.

Powell added a penalty after 52 minutes but the contest was still in the balance but seemed to swing the way of the home side following two tries in eight minutes from Aaron Warren put his side six points ahead, crucially for Bedwas hopes both conversions were off target.

Harley Thomson came off the replacements bench for his first Bedwas appearance in over twelve months and made an immediate impact by crossing for a well worked try, Powell’s conversion putting his side one point ahead. Still there looked little between the sides and good fortune favoured the visitors once again as Maynard’s long range penalty attempt fell sort.

With time running out a penalty to touch set up good field position for Bedwas culminating with Bedwas loose head prop Dan Preece being driven over for a try; his team mates all celebrating wildly. Powell kept his nerve to add the conversion to put Bedwas eight points clear and deny their hosts a losing bonus point.

Two minutes of injury time seemed a lifetime for nervous Bedwas supporters but the team held on for a deserved win.
