The 2016/17 Bermuda Rugby Men's & Women's League Seasons kicked off at the National Sports Center with some entertaining matches.
In Women's League play the Police Ladies defeated the Teachers Ladies 4 - 2, the Police got 3 Try’s from Jo Murray and a single Try from Saphia Tonkin, while the Teachers got a Try each from Lauren Rothwell and Gillian Cross.
The Renegades Ladies defeated the Mariners Ladies 4 - 1. Melissa Franklin and Susie Lacey scored 2 Try’s each for the Renegades, while Amanda Swan scored the lone Try for the Mariners.
The Teachers schooled the Police in the first Men’s match of the day defeating them 31 - 7. The Teachers took the lead after only 5 minutes with Mikle Dill going over after a run down the wing, the Conversion attempt was missed. Jahnico Francis doubled the Teachers lead when a counterattack off highball saw two police players knock each over, the kick was Converted by Chris Naylor making the score 12 - 0.
Sustained pressure by Teachers saw a great run by center Tyler Kendall, who gave a pass to Aldo Campbell to send him through a flat footed Police back line, and when Naylor kicked the Conversion it extended the lead to 19 - 0. Continued pressure by Teachers as well as good hands released Cambell who went over for his second Try which was converted by Pat Paperplane extending the lead to 26 - 0.
Another Teachers counter off poor Police clearing kick saw Campbell break through before off loading to Tashon DeSilva to score but the Conversion was missed leaving the score at 31 - 0.
Police finished game with a flourish break by Delano Coetzer who was supported by Dan Cole who Converted his Try at the whistle making the final score 31 - 7.
The Renegades ran up a score of 56 - 17 on the Mariners, Charles Craigs scored 2 Try’s for the Renegades, while Jamie Baum, Conor McGlynn, Dan Barnett, Andrew Solyntjes, John Quigley and Sam Darave all added a Try each. Brian Archibald kicked 5 Conversions and 2 Penalties. The Mariners got Try’s from Kellen Williams, Avery Williams and Jacques de Verteuil, while Rory Dublin kicked 1 Conversion.
