Bermuda Triathletes Reflect on their Performances

Yesterday we brought you three Bermuda Triathletes compete in two different events, Tyler Smith and Erica Hawley, competed in the Europe Triathlon Cup Caorle in Italy, while Karen Smith competed in the Ironman 70.3 Gulf Coast event in Panama City Beach Florida.

Tyler Smith finished competed in the Men’s Elite race and crossed the line in an impressive 14th place finish in a time of 54.12. Hawley finished the Women’s Elite race in 41st place with a time of 1:03.15.

Karen Smith would clock a time of 4:59.52, she would win the Female 50-54 Age Group Division, ironically Smith and her son Tyler would lead their respective races at the same time as Tyler was leading the Cycle portion of the race, Karen was leading the Age Group on the Run Course.

Erica Hawley said, “In short - I really struggled with Gastrointestinal Stress and Stitches throughout the race. The swim was brutal - field of 75 and it was choppy, while the bike was a chasing game and then it was a flat fast run.”

Tyler Smith said, “I was really pleased with my first European race, I gained points and hopefully it gets me more events.”

Karen Smith said, “Conditions were a bit challenging as the day got warmer and warmer as the race went on.”
