Bermuda’s first competitor in the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, was Triathlete Erica Hawley.
Triathlete Hawley finished 29th overall during the 750m Swim, 20K Bike and 5K Run in a time of 1:08:14.
Hawley had an excellent Swim and was right in the mix coming out in 21st with a time of clocked 10:43.
Unfortunately she had a crash on the first lap of the Bike as the roads were wet and slippery and her back wheel gave way, she clocked a time of 34:35 .
Like a true champion Hawley jumped backed on and rode in the next pack. She had a run time of 21:37 which was the 28th fastest time and finished very strong.
Manager Karen Smith said, “The crash was disappointing and it gave her some road rash but she will be ready for revenge at the relay event. Everyone is super proud of her!”
Chef-de-Mission Katura Horton-Perinchief said, “Could not be more proud of Triathlete Hawley today! She had a strong start and was near the middle of the pack after the swim. After a nasty spill on the bike could've taken her completely out of the race, she hopped back on the Bike and finished with an impeccable time in the 5K run.”
