Fishel Shines in UCLA Overtime Win

IslandStats.com
Mia Fishel and her UCLA Women’s Soccer teammates scored on a penalty kick in the 100th minute to defeat Oregon State, 2-1, in overtime, Senior Marley Canales scored the golden goal to keep UCLA perfect record intact at 6-0, 3-0 in Pac-12 play.

Fishel earned the penalty kick after she was fouled in the box by a Beaver defender after receiving a through ball from Sunshine Fontes. Canales, who came into the game a perfect 4-for-4 from the penalty spot, stepped up with the opportunity to end the game and buried it for the game-winner.

The two teams played a defensive grind in the first half, combining for just six shots, but the last shot of the half, a Fishel header off a Canales corner kick, was the important one, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead at the half.

Oregon State scored at 66:19 in a similar manner, with Sydney Studer equalizing on a header off a corner kick. Kaillen Fried sent the corner to the left post that Madison Ellsworth popped up. With UCLA goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy contesting the corner, Studer leaped up to head Ellsworth's ball past a pair of UCLA defenders at the line.

UCLA had a chance to end it in the final seconds of regulation when Kennedy Faulknor sent a ball into the box that bounced off goalkeeper Bridgette Skiba's leg and onto oncoming traffic, but an Oregon State defender put enough pressure on Reilyn Turner to prevent her from putting a shot on target.

UCLA outshot Oregon State in the contest, 17-6, and had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Brzykcy made one save, while Skiba had three.
