Jones & Mansfield Development Squad Go Down

IslandStats.com
David Jones and his Mansfield Development Squad teammates suffered their fourth defeat of the campaign in the H-K-L North Midlands League as they were beaten 5-2 away at title hopefuls Collingham.

The hosts opened up a two-goal cushion inside the first 15 minutes, before Mansfield enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure with Luke Thomas, Ollie Roome and Max McLeod all going close to a response.

Roome also should have been awarded a spot-kick when he was floored inside the box by the home ‘keeper, but remarkably no penalty was forthcoming and the referee opted instead to show the Mansfield frontman a yellow card for his subsequent protests.

On the stroke of half-time, Mansfield managed to reduce arrears as Roome crept in at the near-post to head home a clever free-kick by Denham Saxton.

However, Collingham looked bright and lively after the re-start and had opened up a 4-1 lead by the time that Roome bagged his second goal of the game with a close-range finish following Jack Hutchinson’s cross.

Mansfield threw caution to the wind as they battled to get back into the game and in an almighty goalmouth scramble, Elliot Holmes and Roome both had shots blocked on the line, with about a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

A seventh goal was forthcoming, but it was for Collingham as they made it 5-2 with five minutes left to play to wrap up all three points on a bitterly cold winter’s night.

The two sides will meet again at the Worksop Van Hire Stadium later in the season.
