David Jones and his Mansfield Town Youth teammates continue to create history as they defeated Tranmere Rovers on penalties in an enthralling FA Youth Cup Third Round tie at One Call Stadium.
Mansfield Town’s dreams were fading desperately as they found themselves trailing 2-1 with just a few seconds left to play, but substitute Ollie Roome dramatically poked the ball home to force extra-time.
After a nail-biting, nervous and intense extra 30 minutes, during which the visitors had a player sent-off for violent conduct, nobody could find a winner and so the match had to be decided by dreaded spot-kicks.
Sam Wilson, the hero from our penalty shoot-out victory over Boston United in round one, repeated the heroics – saving two spot-kicks to ensure that Mansfield will progress to round four.
That means they could now come up against one of England’s elite academies, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea amongst potential opponents, in the fourth round – the draw for which is on Friday.
