IslandStats.com
Today marked the Opening of the 2014 Digicel Kick Start Programme which will take place at the BAA Field over the next two days.

Digicel Bermuda CEO Wayne Caines said, “In 2007, Digicel staged the inaugural Kick Start programme as part of its brand development and grassroots strategy. Digicel believes that grassroots football is vital to the ongoing development of the sport in the Caribbean and Central America. Today’s professional players started out at grassroots clubs and were scouted from there. As such, Digicel believes we must develop young players technically at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Caines went on to say, “As a welcomed addition to this year’s event, Bermuda’s Under 16 Female footballers will participate in a training session with Chelsea FC coaches on Sunday afternoon – further underpinning Digicel’s commitment to the development of the sport among young people regardless of gender.”

Wayne Scott, Minister of Community, Culture and Sports said, “On behalf of the Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports welcome to the coaches from Chelsea FC Foundation to Bermuda. We wish you much success in selecting three players from the dynamic young talent we have here in Bermuda. You have a tough job ahead.”

“In the coming months, our Ministry will present the Bermuda Government ‘s National Sports Policy. After months of consultation on the subject of the progression of sports in Bermuda, the general consensus on the key mandate is youth development, we believe that young sporting talent should be recognized and nurtured. Further, it is clear that support is necessary to enhance the long term development of our young talented athletes. Bermuda’s young footballers, both boys and girls, will benefit from the involvement of Chelsea. The opportunity to receive instruction from international coaches is a great opportunity our youth, continued Minister Scott.
