Optimist World Championships Update

Tayte Stefaniuk
IslandStats.com
As predicted the 52nd Optimist World Championships in San Isidro, Argentina have produced challenging conditions.

Bermuda sailor Tayte Stefaniuk is successfully managing the tricky conditions and has had an impressive first three days with 4 of his 6 races in the top 20, leaving him well positioned in 33rd overall for the second half of the regatta.

The competitors have been faced with a strong current, steep waves and a variety of wind from a steady moderate breeze on day one followed by two days of light and shifty breezes, which saw lengthy postponements ashore.

Fleet racing is now at the halfway mark. Following today the competitors will be split into three fleets, Gold, Silver and Bronze allowing only those in the gold fleet to vie for the title. Team Bermuda will see Tayte Stefaniuk in Gold, Mikey Wollmann in Silver and Adriana Adriana Penruddocke, George Buckley and Joe Arrowsmith in Bronze.

Coach Jenkins said, “The conditions have suited the lighter sailors as it is easier for them to get through the choppy waves in the light air. I am pleased with the spirit and efforts of the team thus far”.

Tomorrow brings the competitive Team Race Championship followed by a lay day and then the final days of racing in their respective fleets.

The leaderboard has Mara Turin of Slovenia in first overall and first female.

Overall results for Team Bermuda

33rd Tayte Stefaniuk
112th Mikey Wollmann
150th Adriana Penruddocke
187th George Buckley
194th Joe Arrowsmith
