Nine Compete in Houston International Karate Tournament

Three students from Bermuda Karate Institute and six from Tabata-Ha Shotokan Karate-Do Bermuda took part in a, first of its kind for most, Karate Tournament. The Houston International Online Championship via Zoom.

There were competitors from England, Ireland, various parts of the US and of course Bermuda. There were 7 Divisions and Bermuda competed in the Krazy Athletic, Forms and Weapons. The other divisions included Showmanship, Adaptive Showmanship, Self Defense and Creative Open Breaking. The Forms and Weapons were split into Traditional, Creative and Musical.

Andrea Mckey finished in 2nd in Traditional Weapons and 3rd in Traditional Kata Over 16 Black Belt Classes.

Rakeysha Robinson won the Traditional Weapons Class and finished 3rd in Traditional Kata Over 16 Black Belt Classes.

Zachery Simons won the Traditional Weapons Class and was 2nd in Traditional Kata Over 16 Beginners Classes.

Massanda Vaughans finished 1st in Traditional Weapons and was 2nd in Traditional Kata 10-15 Age Group Beginners Classes.

Callahj Simons won the Traditional Kata 10-15 Age Group Intermediate Class.

Amiel Trott finished in 3rd place in Traditional Kata 10-15 Age Group Beginners Class.

David Sainsbury finished in 6th place in the Traditional Kata 10-15 Age Group Beginners Class.

Shane Smith finished 2nd in Krazy Athletic and was 6th in Traditional Kata in the 10-15 Age Group Classes.

Fancie Bowens-Tucker won the Krazy Athletic and was 3rd in Traditional Kata Under 9 Intermediate Classes.

For the Krazy Athletic the competitors had to complete do minute to win it challenges, jump tucks, burpees, pushups, squat kicks and sit-ups. They had a minute for each one and had to see how many they could do in that minute.

McKey said, “In this time of uncertainty it was truly an awesome experience. We did Bermuda proud and represented Bermuda to the high standard that we are known for. We have adapted our training to zoom classes for our students and although it is hard teaching on line our students are progressing well.”
