Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards

Fifty six student athletes were honoured at The 32nd annual Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards at Warwick Academy.

This year’s Primary School Girls winner was Ramiah Brangman from West End Primary School. Brangman collected a great deal of silverware during a successful sporting year. She won all seven road races entered including the KPMG Front Street Mile, Telford Magic Mile and the Freisenbruch-Meyer B.U.T, race. She was named Champion Girl in her age group at the BSSF track and field championships for the last three years.

Honorable Mentions were awarded to Adriana Argent from Warwick Academy and Dominique Brown from Gilbert Institute.

The Primary School boy winner was Joao De Sa from Purvis Primary School. De Sa excelled both in academics and sports in 2017. The Purvis Head Boy is an honour student and Gibbons house captain. He has won first place for six consecutive years in the Purvis Primary Science Fair. He represents Purvis in football, track and field and cross country. His main passion is football and represents PHC under 10 blacks. In December he participated in the Powerade football tournament in Barcelona, Spain and will be attending a week long training camp at Bournemouth Football Club in the UK

Honourable mention awards were given to Jannis Roberts from St. George’s Preparatory and Rajae Whitter from Prospect Primary.

Selah Tuzo from Saltus Grammar school won the Middle School Girls award. Tuzo is currently in Trinidad and Tobago representing Bermuda at the NACAC Age Group Track and Field Championships. Tuzo has won the last two KPMG Front Street Mile middle school races and was Bermuda’s only track athlete to medal at the 2016 CUT track and field championships. She won gold in the 1500m at the Barbados Track meet. She is a BSSF all star in netball, football and cricket.

Honourable mention was awarded to Danni Watson from T.N.T Middle School.

Nirobi Smith-Mills from Saltus Grammar school claimed the middle school boys award. He is also currently in Trinidad and Tobago at the NACAC championships. Smith-Mills Has broke the Saltus school records in the 400 and 800m events. He was champion boy at the last three BSSF track and field championships. He also represented Saltus in cricket and basketball. He is a member of Bailey’s Bay Senior mens cricket team and was crowned the BCB under 17 MVP. He is a Under 14, 17 and 19 National Academy Player in cricket.

Honourable mention was presented to Matthew Elliott from Somersfield Academy and Seth Hardtman from the the Whitney Institute Middle School.

CedarBridge Academy’s Micah Pond was the senior school girls recipient. Pond is a current member of both the senior netball and football teams as well as the under 20 football team. She also represented CedarBridge in badminton, basketball, netball, softball, volleyball and track and field. She was a 2017 all star in football, netball and basketball. Pond is the blue house captain and honor roll student. She plays on Devonshire Colts under 16 boys team

Honorable mention went to Zakiyah Durham from Saltus Grammar School.

The senior boys award went to Elisha Darrell from the Berkeley Institute.

Darrell recently represented Bermuda in the high jump and long jump events at the CARIFTA games. He agonizingly missed the podium with a 4th place finish in the high jump and finished 9th in the long jump. He was crowned champion boy in the 2017 BSSF track and field championships sweeping all three jumping events. His current form has qualified him for the Pan Am Games. Darrell scored four times in helping Berkley win the 2017 senior school boys football knockout cup final. Darrell is a consistent honor roll student, prefect and vice house captain at Berkeley.

Honorable mention was awarded to Brian Darling.
