2016 Denton Hurdle Awards

Fifty Eight of Bermuda’s finest student-athletes were honored this evening during the 31st edition of the Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards held Warwick Academy.

This year’s Senior School Boy winner was Tyler Smith from Bermuda High School. Smith was this year’s Outstanding Teen winner in sports. He is also a two time Bermuda Junior Male Athlete of the year. He has finished 4th and 5th in the last two May 24th Half Marathon Derbies. Smith is currently ranked 5th in the Pan Am region for best junior rider. He represented Bermuda in the world youth Olympics, finished 5th in the 5000m at this year’s CARIFTA games, won two silver medals in the 2014 junior Carribbean Cycling Championships.

Smith also excels academically. He has secured his IB Diploma. He placed third in the Bermuda match Olympiad, Beast overall speaker at the Bermuda Schools Debate Tournament, and received the Theory of Knowledge award at BHS graduation. Smith also coaches swimming at Harbor Swim club, volunteers with Ocean Support Foundation on lionfish eradication and is taking emergency training with St. John’s Ambulance.

The Senior School Girl winner was Tiye Williams from Warwick Academy. Williams is one of the premier squash players on the island. She was the plate winner at the 2015 Caribbean Junior Squash championships. She was the classic winner in the 2014 edition. In 2014 she won the Bermuda Junior Squash National Championships and was the plate winner in the womens division. She has won the BSSF over 16 singles and doubles badminton tournaments and represents Warwick Academy in basketball, football volleyball.

Williams also plays the guitar, volunteers and nurseries and coaches squash. She is house captain and prefect and Warwick Academy.

The Middle School Boy winner was Yusef Bushara from Somersfield Academy. Bushara is a two time football all-star. He has represented somersfield in basketball, football, volleyball, track and field, cross country, swimming and field hockey. He has won the PE award at Somersfield three times. He has won 3 gold, 6 bronze and 1 slivers at the Jump Rope World Championships. He also won the “most outstanding player” on his futsal team that competed in the world futsal championships.

Bushara tutors younger students, plays the violin and is an Acolyte at St. Mary’s church. He is a high honors student and the recipient of the L’Alliance Francaise study abroad scholarship. Yusef also organized a “Family fun 5k” on behalf of the Bermuda heart Foundation to raise awareness for heart disease.

The Middle School Girl winner was Kayla Raymond from Mount Saint Agnes Academy. Raymond was one of two girls to be a part of the BCB National Academy cricket team for the 2014 tour to South Africa, Raymond is also an avid runner who has represented Bermuda Pacers club at the Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational. She placed first in the 2016 Mountain Bike Racing series in the 13-15 Division.

Raymond is an altar server at St. Patrick’s, winner of school spirit and citizenship awards. She also received the honorable mention award for this academic year.

Primary School Boy’s winner is Stefan Jones from Somerset Primary. Jones is Deputy Head Boy and house captain at Somerset Primary. Jones is a Cross Country and Track and Field Champion.

The primary School girl winner was Myeisha Sharrieff from Elliot Primary School. Sharrieff competes locally on the track with Pacers and in the pool with Harbor Swim club.
