Hemp Takes Over VicSpirit

IslandStats.com
David Hemp will be unveiled as the new coach of the Australian state of Victoria Elite Women's Team, the VicSpirit, writes Jesse Hogan a Sports writer for The Age.

Hemp, will take over the role from Barry Neivandt, whose two-year contract was not renewed when it expired at the end of last season.

Hemp spent 17 years playing county cricket in England. After never rising beyond England A level he switched his focus to his country of birth, Bermuda, in the lead-up to the 2007 World Cup.

While Hemp moved to Australia after his full-time playing career ended, and last season was the assistant coach of Prahran in Victorian Premier Cricket, he has maintained his ties to Bermuda. Last month he played in an ICC Americas Twenty20 tournament in the United States, scoring 72 not out from 57 balls against Suriname.

The VicSpirit have not won any silverware for the past three seasons. They were defeated in the final of last season's Twenty20 competition, by NSW, and were eliminated in the Semi-Finals of the Women's National Cricket League.

With the Women's Twenty20 competition to change from state-based to city-based teams next season, the same eight that feature in the Men's Big Bash League, it is expected Hemp will also lead either the Stars or Renegades, in addition to the VicSpirit.
