Horton-Perinchief Named to CANOC Committee

The Bermuda Olympic Association (“BOA”) announced that Katura Horton-Perinchief has been named to the Women and Sport Commission of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (“CANOC”).

Horton-Perinchief, who is a BOA Board member, Chair of the BOA Athletes’ Commission and the BOA Women In Sport Committee, will represent Bermuda and the BOA on the CANOC Commission until 2018.

The CANOC Women and Sport Commission’s focus is on raising awareness of the levels of participation of Caribbean Girls and Women in Sport and encouraging the participation of Women in the management and administration of sport in the Caribbean. The Commission also assists in the promotion of programmes of physical activity and sport specific to girls and women through the individual National Olympic Committees.

Judy Simons, BOA President said, “We congratulate Katura on her appointment and we thank her for her ongoing commitment to helping promote girls’ and young women’s participation in sports in Bermuda. With her background as an Elite Athlete and coach, she will bring an important perspective to CANOC deliberations and will be an asset to the Women and Sport Commission. Katura will be an excellent representative for the BOA and a strong advocate for our female athletes.”

Horton-Perinchief competed in diving at the national and international level for ten years, and represented Bermuda at world championship events, the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games, the 2003 and 2007 Pan Am Games, and the 2004 Olympics. She was the first Black Female athlete to compete in Olympic Diving.

Horton-Perinchief is founder and head coach at STAR Diving in Bermuda. She served as Chef de Mission for Bermuda’s team at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China and Assistant Chef de Mission at the 2014 CAC Games in Veracruz, Mexico.

The Minister of Community, Culture and Sports, Pat Gordon-Pamplin, has offered congratulations to Horton-Perinchief on her appointment to CANOC.

Minister Gordon Pamplin said, “I wish to extend our congratulations to Ms Horton-Perinchief on her appointment to the Women and Sport Commission of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (“CANOC”). It is a well-deserved honor. Katura was undoubtedly appointed because of her outstanding knowledge of women’s sports and her experience as an elite athlete. Well done to Katura, and hearty congratulations on this milestone.”
