Golf & Rowing 2014 Year in Review

Ebonie Burgess
IslandStats.com
As promised Islandstats.com, we will be posting a 2014 Year In Review.

Because we have covered most Local Sports there is much to report, so unlike others that can fit a Year of Sports in one or two pages we will be posting a couple of sports per day beginning today to make sure you have the opportunity to review each sport.

Today we continue with Golf and Rowing.

GOLF

The Bermuda Golf Association had a very encouraging year with increased participation in all events from the Monthly Medals and Major Championship events. Much of the success had been the introduction of multiple flights to encourage participation of players of all handicap ranges as well as a reduction in the tournament entry fees which had been facilitated by co-operation with the islands golf courses and sponsorship.

In 2014 the team of Jarryd Dills, Will Haddrell and Mark Phillips represented Bermuda in the World Amateur Team Championships in Japan accompanied by non-playing Captain Chris Brough. The team finished 45th in a challenging field competing for the Eisenhower Trophy.

Additionally, based on their 2014 performance a number of players were invited to play in the 2015 Latin American Amateur Championships in Argentina from January 15th – 18th, 2015. Jarryd Dillas, Mark Phillips and Fraser Hunt have all accepted the invitation to play and will be leaving in a couple of weeks to take part in the event.

2014 Bermuda Open Championships at the Port Royal Golf Course saw Justin Regier win the Open Championship Flight, while In the Open Championship Amateur Division, Jarryd Dillas hung on for the victory.

The 2014 Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships took place at the Mid Ocean Golf Course. Under blustery and raining conditions Fraser Hunt and Ebonie Burgess were crowned Champions.

Daniel Augustus won the Bacardi National Par 3 Championship, the Men’s Amateur Division ended in a sudden death playoff between Jarryd Dillas and Will Haddrell who completed their second round with a tied 4-over par 112. Following three extra play off holes, Haddrell made a 15 foot Birdie to win the Amateur Men’s Title.

The Ladies’ Division also ended in a Sudden Death Playoff between Kathy Lloyd-Hines and Katyna Rabain who both carded a 16-over 124. Lloyd-Hines won the title on the second hole of the Playoff.

ROWING

17 year old Zoe Hedstrom partnered Bermuda Rowing founder and President Michael Swain to race in the 50th Anniversary of the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.

The Regatta saw 10,500 competitors and 500,000 spectators.

Crews from all over the word were racing, including the World and Olympic Champions. This is a particularly tough course as there are many bends and seven bridges to hopefully miss. All this while rowing at top speed and facing backwards.

Hedstrom and Swain will continue to represent Bermuda in rowing in 2015 in various events in the USA.

Swain met with the US rowing squad and they expressed great interest in coming to Bermuda for some training on our beautiful waters.
