The 1964 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVIII Olympiad, was held in Tokyo, Japan from October 10th to 24th. Tokyo had been awarded the organization of the 1940 Summer Olympics, but this honor was subsequently passed to Helsinki because of Japan's invasion of China, before ultimately being canceled because of World War II. The 1964 Summer Games were the first Olympics held in Asia, and the first time South Africa was barred from taking part due to its apartheid system in sports.

The 1984 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXIII Olympiad, was held in Los Angeles, California, United States in 1984. When Tehran, the only other interested city on the international level, declined to bid due to the concurrent Iranian political and social changes, the IOC awarded Los Angeles the Games by default. This was the second occasion Los Angeles hosted the games; it previously hosted in 1932.

The 2004 Summer Olympic Games was officially known as the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad, was held in Athens, Greece, from August 13th to 29th with the motto Welcome Home.
